ELMS admins now have the ability to communicate with students and preceptors via text messaging through the ELMS Messaging Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an annual charge?

Text Messaging in ELMS is an optional add-on module that is available for an annual fee.

What is the maximum amount of texts we can send?

There is no limit currently, however, we reserve the right to set a limit in the future.

Does CompMS or READINESS have Texting?

No, CompMS and READINESS do not have texting functionality at this time.

Is there a character limit for text messages, and if so, what's the limit?

Yes, the character limit is currently set at 160 characters. Text alerts include the message's subject and a link to the full message, and both count towards the character limit. If the subject and link exceed this limit, the subject will be truncated.

Where can students expect to see their messages?

Student messages will appear based on the settings configured in the Messaging Center in ELMS. All messages must go through the Messaging Center for tracking purposes.

Can we text Preceptors and ELMS Admins?

Yes, you could send to either user, assuming that the user has opted in.

Can students respond to texts? If so, where do those responses go?

We currently do not have anything set up to receive text messages. At this time, text messages are only outgoing.

Do we need to “Opt In” our students? What is the process?

Yes, students need to be opted-in

i. In the messaging center, there is a setting to send the recipients of the message a link to update their Text Messaging Opt-In Settings.

ii. Users of any account type can change their opt-in settings from their account information page.

Will admins be alerted if a text fails due to an incorrect number, similar to email bounce-backs?

Currently, there are no alerts for this scenario. However, if a text fails to send due to an invalid number, a warning icon will appear on both the Messaging Center recipients list and the recipient's popup on the Messaging Center home page.
